“Wind energy powers 57% of Iowa’s net electric generation, the highest share of any state, and Iowa is the second-largest wind power producer, after Texas. Capacity continues to grow, with about 1,500 megawatts of new wind power generating capacity coming online in 2020 alone. Surplus production continues to increase.
Since 2008, Iowa has generated more electricity each year than it consumes. Excess power is sent to other States over the regional electric grid. As it is more efficient to use electricity near its point of generation, the State’s average electricity price is below the U.S. average.

The Result
In 2019, wind turbines in Iowa generated more electricity than coal-fired power plants for the first time. Coal-fired generation in Iowa has decreased from 53% to 24% of the State’s net electricity in 2020, while wind power grew from 32% to 57% of the state’s net generation at the same time.
MiningStore facility helps Grundy County Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) capitalize on available energy produced in and otherwise destined to leave Iowa, creating a new source of revenue that helps strengthen infrastructure and lower energy costs for its member-owners.
